JANG Sooji’s works project the anxious inner feelings of unfamiliarity and the loneliness felt in society to a portrait of a girl. An adult symbolizes the present, and a girl symbolizes the ideal. JANG projects an ideal through an image of a girl and to replace the anxiety felt in reality with consolation. JANG believes that when anxious or fearful feelings grow, the facial expression disappears. The artist expresses the emotions through the eyes in the hidden expression of the girl who is not mature in emotional expression and the eyes of consolation in her gaze. The characters portrayed in the works convey comfort by staring at the front and sharing their emotions.
There are buds around the torso of the girl and deer, horns, birds creating a presence that does not exist in reality, dreamingescape from reality. These motives shown in the background the symbolize the defense system and the present comfort. A girl is a selfportrait of people who feel uneasy in modern society. This symbolizes a universal selfportrait from a personal selfportrait. JANG conveys comfort to the shaken reality through emotional sympathy for the loss of self and mental anxiety of modern people.
