VIVIAN CHOI GALLERY is pleased to present Yun Jung Lee solo exhibition, ‘Memory of Senses’. Through the use of mixed-media, expressive brushstrokes, and celebration of vibrant colors, Yun Jung Lee presents the emotion locked in her conscious and unconscious memories. Her abstract paintings expose the power of her inner voice and energy and create a new visual language which recreates moody and mystical desires for transcendence and the infinite. In this solo exhibition, VIVIAN CHOI GALLERY presents the most recent works of Yun Jung Lee and her ‘Heart Series’, the visual language of the artist’s personal memories of love and the subtle emotion of love.
Yun Jung Lee is credited to create a unique area of lyrical abstraction by visualizing memories of personal experiences and consciousness in dreamlike colors and expressive matiére. From the early days Yun Jung Lee introduced her lyrical abstraction through the establishment of her consciousness in the realm of abstractions as an embodiment of universal humanity rather than telling history, religion and myth with paints. 

For Lee, color is a record of past experiences and her work draws the ambiguous feelings of human emotion through romantic colors and improvisation of lines. Lee’s canvas is a mixture of rich colors, raw materials such as fabric and Korean paper, and a flexible combination of drawings. Lee’s expression of emotions is implicit, symbolic, and sometimes ambiguous, rather than direct and explicit. This ambiguity is due to the convey of visual images, expressiveness of the rhythm and harmony of the scattered colors that are spontaneously expressed as if scribbled like graffiti. This is the artist’s concrete gestures to diversify the visual language of communication to share emotions and senses with viewers. 
Lee has participated numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout Korea, Japan, and New York, and prominent international art fairs.

비비안초이 갤러리는 개인적 경험과 감성에 대한 기억을 몽환적 색채로 시각화하여  서정적 추상의 독보적 영역을 구축한 이윤정 작가의 개인전 <Memory of Senses, 감각의 기억>展을 연다. 

작품 초기 시절부터 추상의 영역에 자신의 의식과 경험을 정착시켜 서정적 추상을 선보여온 이윤정 작가는 물감을 가지고 역사와 종교, 신화를 이야기하기보다는 보편적 인간성의 구현(embodiment)으로서 작가 개인의 기억의 잔상과 경험을 은유적으로 표현한다. 이를 통해 작가는 인간사의 희노애락의 이야기를 관람자들과 공유하는 작업을 진행해 왔다. 비비안초이 갤러리에서의 이번 개인전에서는 그래피티적인 즉흥성이 강조된 작가의 가장 최근 작업들과 특히 사랑에 대한 작가 개인의 기억과 미묘한 사랑의 감정을 시각화하여 로맨틱한 색채로 풀어낸 하트 시리즈를 선보인다.
이윤정에게 색은 지나온 경험에 대한 기록이다. 그의 작품은 희로애락에 대한 인간의 모호한 감정에 대한 상상을 끌어내고 있다. 흐르는 색채와 감정을 분출하듯 퍼져나가는 물감의 덩어리, 그리고 드로잉의 유연한 결합이 응집된 캔버스는 현실과 삶 속에서의 경험들 그리고 인간관계의 다양한 이야기를 시각화한다. 이윤정은 작품을 통해 ‘희(喜)’는 암흑의 색채 속에서 숨겨져 있는 분출할 수 없는 기쁨을, ‘노(怒)’는 겉으로는 들어낼 수 없는 노여움과 과거의 노여움의 흐릿한 기억을, ‘애(哀)’는 슬프지만 웃고 있는 모습, 나 자신도 알지 못하는 군중 속의 슬픔을, ‘락(樂)’은 즐거움이 전이되는 자신, 남들이 즐거워하는 모습에 즐거워하는 자신을 표현한다고 말한다. 작품 속 몽환적 색채의 리듬은 과거와 현실을 잇는 기억들을 담고 있으며 작가는 내면의 감성을 도출하여 새로운 창조적인 형태의 감성의 색채를 리드미컬하게 풀어낸다. 


이윤정의 회화는 색을 통한 감각에 기초를 두고 관람객과 소통을 시도하며 경험과 기억을 받치고 있는 무의식을 자극하여 상상하고 추억하게 하는 작용을 한다. 그런데 이 과정에서 작가는 서양의 추상표현주의적 직설화법보다는 서정성이 가미된 추상적 표현을 동원하고 있다. 이윤정의 작업에서 색채의 표현은 기억의 잔상을 이미지화하는 주요한 도구로서 작가는 이러한 색채를 다루는데 있어서도 지극히 절제가 필요한 순간과 자신의 내면을 폭발적으로 분출할 필요가 있는 순간을 적절하게 조절해내고 있다. 그리하여 추상회화의 격렬한 공격성이 이윤정의 회화에서는 오히려 억제되고 조절되어 소위 서정적 추상이라는 안정감과 더 나아가 초월적이고 때로는 몽환적이기까지 한 인식과 경험의 장을 펼치는 경지에 이르게 해준다.

이렇듯 색채를 중심으로 한 시각적 이미지를 전달하는 이윤정의 화법은 직설적이기보다는 암시적이고 상징적이며 때로는 모호하고 다의적이다. 그러나 이러한 모호성은 작가의 감각을 통해 나타나는 색채의 표현력이나 화면 안에서 드러나는 색채의 리듬과 조화, 흘러내리는 물감과 흩뿌려진 색선, 낙서처럼 끄적거린 듯이 즉흥적으로 표현된 이미지들, 그리고 화면에 투척된 듯한 비회화적인 물질들을 통한 작가의 구체적 제스처가 소통의 언어를 다양화하고 있으며 무엇보다도 색을 통한 관계의 형성과 소통의 가능성을 높이고 있다.
