Kev Munday 'Making a Scene'

VIVIAN CHOI GALLERY is pleased to present solo exhibition of  Kev Munday. A British artist Kev Munday (b. 1986) creates colourful, utopian worlds and invites the viewer to spend some time living in them. Influenced by Japanese kawaii graphics and Huichol yarn paintings, Kev Munday developed his unique cartoonesque style with his inspirations from street art. Inspired by people-watching and the everyday, Kev exaggerates and celebrates the ordinary and aims for his art to appeal to all ages. Using bold lines and block colours, the vibrancy of Munday’s style creates an enthralling visual experience. His iconic crowd paintings depict a sea of unique individuals which pays tribute to the beauty found in diversity. Each individual portrait is equally valued, taken altogether, the effect is a striking vision of community which is more than the sum of its individual parts.

Starting his artistic career at the age of 16, his first endeavors were in the form of street-art, including post ups, walls and leaving stickers on public furniture. After a fellow artist and friend suggested to transfer his work onto canvas, he continued to use bold lines and vibrant colours he was leaving on the streets. In the tradition of artists such as Hieronymus Bosch, Munday’s paintings can be read like a wimmelbilderbuch (German, literally ‘teeming picture book’), depicting scenes richly detailed with humans, animals, creatures and objects waiting to be discovered and interpreted by the viewer. 

In 2016 Kev Munday was named by The Telegraph as one of five British Artists to invest. He created artwork for brands such as Walt-Disney, Graham & Brown Wallpaper and Uni-Ball. Munday’s art has been exhibited in some of England’s most notorious galleries, including The Royal Academy of Arts, The Arnolfini and The Hayward Gallery. He is regularly invited to produce artwork live at art fairs and events, previous performances include London Fashion Week. Kev Monday’s art is collected worldwide, with exhibitions taking place in France, The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, The USA and South Korea.

2008: The youngest artist to be included in Dreweatts inaugural Urban Art Sale alongside Banksy, Blek Le Rat, David Choe & more
2009: Exhibited at Bazaart, London, a pop up exhibition featuring Stik, Pure Evil, Fake & others.
2010: Invited by Disney Asia to customize a Mickey Mouse figure to be showcased at Times Square, Hong Kong as part of their ‘Mickey Brand Halo’ event.
2011: Included in the Sea No Evil charity art auction in California, USA alongside artists including Shepard Fairey, Camille Rose Garcia & 123Klan
2012: Collaboration furniture range exhibited at Designers Block at The Hayward Gallery, London
2013: Invited to participate in the first London Illustration Fair at Hoxton Arches.
2014: ‘The Way I See Things’, a solo exhibition that toured several arts centres across the UK

2015: Booth of the artists work exhibited at The Other Art Fair at The Arnolfini, Bristol, UK
2016: Listed by The Telegraph newspaper as one of five ‘British Artist’s To Invest In’
2017: solo exhibition with Kalkman Gallery in Maastricht, The Netherlands. 
2017: Invited by Hampshire Police to graffiti one of their constabulary’s cars. 
2019: Collaboration with IKEA on a colouring poster in the artists signature style. Over 30,000 copies sold worldwide.

비비안초이갤러리는 5월 18일 부터 6월 10일까지  영국 작가 케브 먼데이 Kev Munday (British 1986-)의 개인전을 선보인다. 
 
2016년 영국 ‘The Telegraph’ 가 투자해야 할 가장 중요한 영국 아티스트 5명 중 한 명으로 선정한 케브 먼데이는 그래픽과 스트리트 아트에서 받은 영감을 바탕으로 현대인의 삶을 자신만의 만화 cartoonesque 스타일의 독특한 화풍으로 그려낸다. 케브 먼데이는 현대인의 일상을 특유의 유아적 상상력으로 과감하게 표현하여 나이와 국적을 넘은 폭넓은 관객에게 사랑받고 있으며 월트 디즈니 Walt Disney, 네스카페 Nescafe, 이케아 IKEA 등 세계적인 기업과 협업하였다. 

1986년 잉글랜드 햄프셔에서 출생한 케브 먼데이는 주변의 평범한 사람들을 일상을 관찰하며 받은 영감을 대담한 선과 밝고 강렬한 색채를 사용하여 표현함으로써 매혹적인 시각적 경험을 선사한다. 어린시절 키스헤링, 바스키아, 무라카미 다카시의 작품을 좋아했던 먼데이는 이들의 영감을 받아 십대 때부터 그래피티 작가로 활동하였다. 대학에서 그래픽 디자인을 전공하였으나 일러스트 보다는 자유분방한 그래피티에 더 매료되어 영국 전역의 빌딩과 빌보드에 자신의 스트리트 작품을 남겼다. 16세에 스트릿 아티스트로 예술 경력을 시작한 먼데이는 영국의 거리 곳곳에 그린 스트릿아트 작업을 캔버스에 그리기 시작하였고 스트릿아트에서 썼던 굵은 선과 강렬한 색상을 계속 사용했다그의 작품이 알려지자 2017년 영국 햄프셔 경찰청은 먼데이에게 컨셉트카 제작을 의뢰했고 먼데이는 공권력의 권위의 상징인 경찰차를 특유의 자유분방한 선과 색채를 사용해 대중 친화적인 경찰차로 표현하였다. 런던 시민들은 갤러리가 아닌 영국 거리 곳곳에서도 먼데이의 작품을 친근하게 만나고 있다. 2019년 이케아 IKEA와 협업을 통해 컬러링 포스터를 출시하였는데, 그의 시그니처 스타일인 ‘군중’ 일러스트레이션 포스터는 전 세계적으로 삼 만장 이상 판매되었으며 2021년에는 네스카페와 협업하여 네스카페의 테이크아웃 라인을 디자인 하였다. 

케브 먼데이가 묘사한 작품 속 다양한 표정을 짓고있는 개인들은 15세기 네덜란드 화가 히에로니무스 보쉬 Hieronymus Bosch 의 작품에서 나오는 여러 인물들의 집합체를 떠오르게 한다. 작가는 인간과 동식물의 다양한 모습과 표정을 담은 군중을 통해 다양성 속의 내재된 아름다움에 경의를 표하고 있으며 이는 개인 보다는 공동체가 가지는 더 큰 영향력에 대한 작가의 비전을 나타낸다. 먼데이는 현대인의 평범한 하루를 기쁨과 환의가 가득한 축제로 표현함으로써 작가의 유토피아적 세계관을 작품에 담는다. 

케브 먼데이는 영국왕립미술원 The Royal Academy of Arts, 아놀피니 The Arnolfini, 헤이워드 갤러리 The Hayward Gallery에서 전시하였고 프랑스, 네덜란드, 벨기에, 독일 및 미국 등 전세계에서 전시하고 있으며 비비안초이갤러리의 미국과 아시아 전 지역의 전속 작가로 활동하고 있다.
