Nakazawa’s works are mixtures of familiar scenery and everyday experiences with the contents of fantasy and colourful explorations into the depths of imagination. His reminiscent paintings echo visual poem between splendor and isolation. Nakazawa’s paintings are characterized by expressive and impressionistic brushwork, muted colors, dreamlike atmosphere and distinctive motifs. Nakazawa frequently paints adolescents and animals, the distinctive four seasons of Japan amid lushly grown suburban and urban scenes of Japan. The disorientating union of the unknown and familiar, haunting and banal imaginatively transgresses boundaries.Nakazawa tends to paint visibly unevenly across the surface of his paintings, with some areas receiving one layer of paint, in contrast to the multiple layers in other areas.

도쿄를 기반으로 활동하는 작가 나카자와 류지 Nakazawa Ryuji 는 익숙하고 낯익은 일본의 교외와 도시 풍경을 현실과 상상이 뒤섞인 몽환적인 분위기로 담아내어 아름다운 풍경에 비춰진 고독과 외로움을 회화적으로 표현한다. 역동적인 붓터치와 대조적으로 차분한 색상으로 묘사한 일본 도시 외곽의 익숙한 풍경과 만화적인 환상이 뒤섞여 있는 나카자와 류지의 독특한 회화는 화려한 풍경 속에서 느껴지는 역설적인 고독을 담는다.  일상적 경험과 환상이 한 화면에서 뒤섞여 상상 (imagination) 의 깊이를 탐구하는 나카자와의  작품에는 성장기의 소년이 자주 등장한다. 소년은 일본 도심과 외곽의 폐교, 빈 집, 길고양이 등 다소 을씨년스러운 광경을 멍하니 바라보거나 주위를 서성인다. 소년은 과거 화려했던 일본의 경제와 문화를 마치 과거의 죽은 유물처럼 아득히 바라 보는데 이는 소위 ‘잃어버린 30년’이라고 불리는 일본의 장기 경기 침체 속에서 상실감을 느끼는 일본의 신세대, 즉 90 년대 생인 나카자와 자신의 모습을 반영하듯 하다. 나카자와의 회화에는 서양의 인상주의 화풍을 연상시키는 풍부하고 역동적인 붓터치가 두드러지는데 작가는 스쳐 지나간 장면의 찰나를 빠르게 화폭에 옮기는 듯 경계를 흐릿한 선으로 흩뜨린다. 또한 일본 망가 (만화)에서 영향을 받아 장난스러우면서도 신비스러운 독특한 인물의 묘사는 나카자와 특유의 만화적인 독특한 화풍을 잘 보여준다.
친숙함 속에 느껴지는 미지의 세계, 진부한 일상 속에 느껴지는 환상적이고 아름다운 세계, 나카자와 류지의 이 상반된 결합은 현실과 상상의 경계를 넘어 꿈과 현실 사이의 매혹적인 세계를 비춘다. 나카자와 류지는 일본의 명문 미술대학인 무사시노 미술대에서 회화를 전공했고 도쿄를 중심으로 일본에서 개인전과 그룹전을 가지며 활발히 활동하고 있다.
