Since the 1990s, Won Kun Jun, who lives and works in Düsseldorf, Germany, has expanded the monochromatic painting to a new perspective by exploring the relationship between the abstract area and color of monochromatic painting. Color is the primary focus and fundamental element of Won Kun Jun’s paintings, which explore color relationships and abstract fields of monochrome. Won layers 20 to 30 thin coats of watered-down paint—shades of red, yellow, blue, and green—onto white canvas, so that the color is evenly distributed and all traces of the artist’s hand are erased, a process that can take up to a year. The result is what Won considers a glimpse into his consciousness—color relationships that convey feeling and visualize his emotions, and which are imbued with an aura, a sense of age, and mystery. Won’s colors generate what he calls “resonance in harmony,” a cohesive equilibrium that recalls the principles of yin and yang. By overlapping colors countless times over time, Jun has created a visual space in the painting and captured the infinite light. The paint marks and layers of color overlap each other to create a subtle color, resulting in a natural color from the bottom of the canvas. As if a clear glaze was applied to the surface of the ceramic, the brilliant light that gently leaked from the surface of the canvas visually conveys an infinite layer of time. As the paint is applied more than 50 times, the paint flows down from the edge of the canvas and traces of wiping remain. The side of the canvas is a symbolic space in Won Kun Jun’s works, presenting the process of work such as performance, the artist's mission as an artist.

전원근   Won Kun JUN 

1990년대부터 독일에 거주하며 활동하는 전원근 작가는 ‘색’ 이라는 회화의 근본적인 물성을 이용해 단색의 추상적인 영역과 색의 관계를 탐구하며 절제된 단색화를 작가만의 새로운 시각으로 확장해왔다. 색은 전원근의 회화의 기본 요소이며 핵심 주제다. 작가는 시간을 두고 색을 수없이 중첩 시킴으로써 회화에 시각적 공간을 창조하고 색의 음영이 창조하는 무한한 빛과 색의 깊이를 담아왔다. 

전원근 작가는 캔버스에 묽은 아크릴 물감을 스무 번 이상 얇게 덧칠하여 색상을 고르게 분포한 뒤 물과 붓으로 닦아 낸다.  다시 빨강, 노랑 초록, 파랑, 이 네 가지 색을 50 겹 정도 쌓아 올리고 지우는 작업을 반복하는데 이 작업은 길게는 1년 이상이 걸리는 수행의 과정이다. 물감이 벗겨진 자국들과 수 겹의 색의 레이어가 서로 겹쳐져 은은하게 발색 되어 자연스러운 빛깔이 캔버스 밑에서부터 우러나온다. 작가는 여러 색의 결합이 고유한 정체성을 가진 또 다른 색이 되는 과정과 여러 겹의 색이 수없이 중첩되며 색의 미묘한 차이들이 만들어낸 명암을 화면에 담는다. 하나의 색이 다른 색과 결합하여 새로운 색의 레이어로 확장되어 색의 형태들 표면에는 광환 (corona) 이 둘러지며 광채 (radiance)를 띠는데 물감을 닦아내고 흔적을 만드는 과정이 이러한 광환 형성의 결정적인 요소가 된다. 마치 도자 표면에 맑은 유약을 바른 듯 캔버스 표면에서 은은하게 새어 나온 영롱한 빛은 무한한 시간의 겹을 시각적으로 전달한다. 물감을 50번 이상 올리면서 캔버스 가장자리는 물감이 흘러내리고 닦여진 흔적들이 그대로 남는다. 캔버스 옆면은 전원근의 작품 세계에서 상징적인 공간으로, 수행 과도 같은 작업의 과정과 예술가로서의 작가의 사명, 그리고 여러 겹의 시간의 흔적을 제시한다.
