Vivian Choi Gallery is pleased to present Kyoto based Japanese artists, Aka Okumura. Aka Okumura creates a bizarre and surreal visual effect by combining diverse symbolic motifs and unique color tone influenced by traditional Japanese ukiyo-e prints and manga. Aka Okumura presents Gothic Cute, or "Gurokawa", a style that mixes elements of cuteness with macabre themes. The unique visual contrast challenges the viewer's perception of beauty and discomfort. Aka Okumura explores the spiritual aspect of life and death by contrasting the two different worlds through vibrant symbols and black background.
Amid of the threat of breaking wars in the different corners of the world, life threating disaster caused by the climate change, the level of anxiety in the post pandemic era have profoundly impacted the art of Aka Okumura. The fear over unpredictable and premature death that could come to anybody at any time is the subject that is deluded by the cute girl character and vibrant colors and abundance of ukiyoe inspired patterns. Okumura paints the world of death on a black background, the world of life that sparkles inside, by creating a girl as an icon that mediates the two worlds. Okumura’s work reinterprets death as a natural cycle of life and a rebirth by depicting the existence of an immortal girl in a world that continues to evolve in the cycle of life and death.

The beauty of Aka Okumura’s art lies in a distinct blend of traditional Japanese visual elements and cultural influences with a modern, pop-culture influenced aesthetic. She appropriates traditional Japanese imagery from Ukiyo-e prints, the genre of Japanese art that flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. Ukiyo-e prints often describes subjects such as female beauties, kabuki actors, geisha, flora, and erotica. The girl, the goddess situated in the middle of Aka Okumura work is enclosed by huge arching waves that featured in the [“Mount Fuji” : The Great Wave off the Coast of Kanagawa], woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai.  Aka Okumura takes existing images traditional Japanese art elements and transform them into contemporary graphic. This adds a touch of familiarity to her work.

오쿠무라 아카 Okumura Aka 

오쿠무라 아카는 삶과 죽음의 순환 속에서 영생하는 영원한 소녀의 존재를 일본의 전통적인 시각적 요소와 대중문화와 혼합하여 현대적으로 표현한다. 오쿠무라는17 세기부터 19 세기까지 번성했던 일본 미술 장르인 우키요에 Ukiyo-e 판화에서 등장하는 파도,벗꽃, 부채 등 전통적인 일본 고전 미술 요소를 차용하여 이를 그래픽화 하거나 현대적인 이미지로 재창조한다. 오쿠무라는 검은 바탕을 죽음의 세계로 표현하고 그 안에서 빛나는 생명의 세계를 그리는데 작품에 등장하는 소녀를 이 두 세계를 중재하는 매개체로서 표현한다. 기후 변화가 만든 생명을 위협하는 재난, 세계 각지에서 일어나는 전쟁 그리고 포스트 펜데믹 시대를 엄습한 불안은 오쿠무라 아카의 예술에 깊은 영향을 미쳤다. 오쿠무라는 삶과 죽음의 순환 속에서 계속해서 진화하는 세계를 불멸의 소녀의 존재 통해 표현함으로써 죽음을 삶과 재생의 자연스러운 순환으로 해석한다.교토를 중심으로 활동하는 오쿠무라 아카는 일본과 홍콩, 중국에서 20회 이상의 개인전과 단체전을 가졌고 2023년 아트센트럴 홍콩 ART CENTRAL HK, 2022년 징아트 JINGART 에서 전시하였다.
