Andy Harwood is a Brisbane based artist who expresses emotion as a visual language, exploring the psychological effect of mathematically derived geometric and non-representational forms.  In 2020, his work, '9 to the power of 9 (2)', was notably included in Museum of Brisbane’s exhibition, <Bauhaus Now>.
Harwood completed his Bachelor of Design in 2004, and combining his design background with influences from the likes of Piet Mondrian, Kazimir Malevich and Josef Albers, established a disciplined and meticulous practice. 

Harwood’s latest series of work, 'Future Rumination' (2022) extends themes explored in previous exhibitions, most notably the capacity for abstract geometry to evoke an emotive response in the viewer. Influenced by the Op Art movement, and in particular Josef Albers’ 'Homage to the Square', and Richard Anuszkiewicz’s Temple Series, 'Future Rumination' exploits the functional relationship between retina and brain, between seeing and interpreting. Harwood utilises geometry to create the impression of the ruminating brain in the viewer. The gaze oscillates in a tension between inner and outer space, the edges of forms directing focus outwards like an arrow, while the transition of colour gradients from light to dark pulls the gaze inwards to the inescapable void at the centre. The viewer’s sense of space and reality is distorted as shapes simultaneously appear to recede and advance. Harwood counters the structural precision of geometric forms by building colour in semi-transparent, painterly layers, blending colours together to produce a kinetic, reverberating effect. The repetition of colour and form reflects repetition of thought, as the ruminative mind is unable to break free from the cycling of thoughts, paradoxically frozen in place by over-analysis. Featuring portals, pillars and neon light, 'Future Rumination' holds the viewer in a liminal space between order and disarray, movement and stillness.

호주 태생의 앤디 하우드 Andy Harwood는 브리즈번을 기반으로 활동하는 아티스트로 15년 이상 시드니, 마드리드, 런던, 오스트리아의 여러 갤러리와 미술관 전시에 참여했다. 특히 2020년에 앤디 하우드의 최근작인 <9 to the Power of 9 (2)> 는 브리즈번 미술관 Museum of Brisbane의 전시인 《Bauhaus NOW》에 포함되며 미술관 큐레이터들과 세계 컬렉터들에게 상당한 관심을 받았다. 2004년에 퀸즐랜드 대학 Queensland College of Art 에서 디자인을 전공한 앤디 하우드 Andy Harwood는 몬드리안 Piet Mondrian, 말레비치 Kazimir Malevich 그리고 조셉 알버스 Josef Albers 에서 받은 영향과 자신의 디자인 전공 배경을 결합하여 작가만의 독특한 작품 세계를 확립하였다. 


앤디 하우드 Andy Harwood는 기하학적이고 비구상 색 면 (abstract color field)을 통해 인간의 감정을 작가만의 시각적 언어로 표현한다. 이번 전시 《색면 추상; 빛 너머의 색》에서 선보이는 작품들은 작가의 최근작 <Future Rumination 2022> 시리즈의 일부로 추상 기하학이 관객에게 정서적 반응을 불러일으키는 능력에 대한 연구이다. 이 시리즈는 옵아트 Optical Art, 특히 조셉 알버스 Josef Albers의 작품, <정사각형에 대한 경의 Homage to the Square> 에 대한 오마주이다.  리처드 에누즈키에위즈 Richard Annuszkiewicz의 <템플 Temple> 시리즈에 영향을 받은 <Future Rumination> 시리즈는 망막과 뇌의 지각 사이의 기능적 관계를 탐구한다.  

하우드 Harwood는 질서와 무질서 사이에서 유동하는 인간의 뇌의 감각에 관심을 두고 수학적인 비율을 통해 기하학적이고 비구상의 형태가 전달하는 심리적 효과를 탐구한다. 특히 형태와 구조의 관계에 중점을 두고 인간의 시각과 작품의 형태, 크기, 위치, 색 그리고 공간의 상호 작용에 주목한다. 작품의 구성은 균형과 비율로 도출되는 압도적인 감각을 만들기 위해 수학적으로 계산된다. 서로 대조되는 색의 스펙트럼과 일정한 색 면 패턴은 관객이 새롭고 다양한 시각적 내러티브에 참여하도록 유도한다. 작가는 다양한 질감의 레이어링으로 밑그림을 그려서 화폭에 에너지와 움직임을 부여한다. 반복되는 패턴은 캔버스를 가로질러 전경과 배경이 겹쳐지며 관람자의 시선을 중심 초점에서 빗나가게 한다.  관람자의 시선은 캔버스 안쪽과 바깥쪽 공간 사이의 장력 張力에 따라 움직이는데, 캔버스 안쪽으로 초점을 맞추는 형태의 가장자리는 밝은 색에서 어두운 색으로 전환하며 마치 인피니티 미러 infinity mirror 처럼 시선을 캔버스 중앙으로 끌어당긴다.  하우드는 Harwood는 형상이 후퇴하고 전진하는 반향적인 효과를 내기 위해 반투명하고 화사한 색 층, 즉 색의 레이어 (layer of colors) 를 만든다. 색을 혼합하여 점진적인 색의 그라데이션을 만들어 기하학적 형태의 구조적 정밀도를 형성한다. 기하학적인 형태와 색채의 장력을 통해 형상이 후퇴하고 전진하는 모습을 동시에 보면서 보는 이의 공간감과 현실감이 왜곡된다. 색깔과 형태의 반복은 생각의 반복을 반영하는데, 깊이 반추할수록 생각의 순환에서 벗어날 수 없고, 과도한 분석은 역설적으로 생각을 제 자리에 얼어붙게 한다는 역설을 작가는 끝이 보이지 않는 깊은 우물 (infinity well) 형태로 표현한다. 색 기둥 (columns) 그리고 네온 불빛과 같은 형광색 (fluorescent color)을 특징으로 하는 <Future Rumination> 작품은 질서와 무질서, 움직임과 정적 사이의 경계로 관객의 시선을 안내한다.
