VIVIAN CHOI GALLERY is pleased to present [ Vanilla Sky – Between Dream and Reality ], duo exhibition by Saerom Jeong and Ji Hee Lee from February 14 to March 11, 2023.

 Saerom Jeong has been reinterpreting still-life and portraits with abbreviated forms and images, inspired by Impressionism, Pop Art, and Abstract Expressionism, while Ji Hee Lee paradoxically depicts surreal and dreamy images with her unique hyper-realist style. [Vanilla Sky] showcase the most recent works by the two artists together with the early days of their work.  The title of the exhibition, [Vanilla Sky], is cited from the subtitle of Claude Monet's work, 'The Seine at Argenteuil-Vanilla Sky 1873', which appears as the background in the 2001 film ‘Vanilla Sky’. For Monet, this period was when he had a happy time with his wife and son, and Monet captured the beautiful surroundings of Argenteuil, a suburb of Paris, in his works during his time in Argenteuil. 
The vanilla-colored sky created by the clouds twinkling in the light is unrealistically beautiful, charming enough to make you forget the reality, and sweet like a dream you don't want to wake up from. However, as time passes, it quickly becomes dark, and we face the cold reality in the beauty that is only fleeting. The fact that objects cannot be seen accurately under the light predicts the advent of abstraction in art, and Monet, who tried to break with tradition by showing the difference between what is known and what is seen, inspired numerous artists as a pioneer of Avant-Garde art.
 

Paintings by Saerom Jeong pursue essential forms, colors, and harmony among them. Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) thought that when we look at an object, the first thing that catches our eye is a piece of color, and the form follows based on them and recognizes it. Saerom Jeong, who claims to have been inspired by Cézanne's still-life paintings, captures the essential structure of an object rather than its external appearance and simplifies nature, objects, and people into lines, planes, and circles.  In Saerom's Jeong paintings, which evoke pop art and impressionism at the same time, the faces of the figures are simplified into shapes, and apples, flowers, and plants also have distinctive geometric features of round and curved lines. The person's face is replaced with a round ball, and the person's body is simplified with minimal shapes such as thick outlines and colored surfaces. In order to emphasize the general human shape rather than a specific person, the artist intentionally erases the details of the individual's external appearance and simplifies the face into a basic figure to create a graphically deformed figure. It is drawn as a portrait of a modern person, not a distinguishable individual or a specific person, and induces the audience to project and substitute themselves.  The stems of plants appearing in the work show a supernaturally fast growing movement and look lively, reminding us of a strange sight seen in a dream even though it is a real object. The figures show clarity in the stillness, such as picking fruits, reading books, and drinking tea among the flowers and plants around them. Saerom Jeong  avoids realistic depiction of objects and composes the canvas with the intention of abstract brush touches and dripping paint to express daily life in a pictorial way. 

Korean artist, Ji Hee Lee has been talking about the subject of 'a shelter' expressing it in a surrealistic way through everyday objects such as cats, aquariums, and fruits. Lee draws imaginary images with her unique hyper-realism technique, delivering a fresh visual experience by close-up or blurring the focus of the subject. Young cats, dessert fruits, and aquariums appear in Ji Hee Lee's works, and the hyper-realistic expression method that expresses the sticky texture of melting chocolate and the fluffy and smooth texture of cat's hair is especially noticeable in Ji Hee Lee's paintings. While not following the original proportions of the subject, Lee closes up the subject and depicts it hyper-realistically, while another subject on the same screen, on the contrary, blurs the focus and boldly breaks away from perspective to express it abstractly. Through bold primary color treatment, hyper-realistic depiction of the subject, and simplification and abstraction of the subject, Ji Hee Lee breaks away from the methods and structures seen in conventional paintings without hesitation. The cat, the subject of the work, cannot take her eyes off the aquarium as if she longs for the freedom and tranquility of the fish swimming in the vast aquarium, and focuses on the sweet dessert, but is free and comfortable. It responds to and indulges in the dynamic movements of a huge whale and the subtle movements of aquatic plants. Humans do not appear in Ji Hee Lee’s work, but the cats are peaceful and free in their own imaginary space without interference from humans or anyone else. To the cat, the cake becomes a peaceful and vast aquarium, and the whales and aquatic creatures in the aquarium are safe and free in their own sanctuary, disconnected from the world of cats indulging themselves.  

Ji Hee Lee who conveys the tranquility felt in a vast aquarium and the warmth felt in a small cat through the 'Sweet Shelter' series, makes people in this modern society contemplate what their own sanctuary is and whether they have found it, just as a vast aquarium becomes a sanctuary for cats.

비비안초이갤러리는 2023년 2월 14일부터 3월 11일까지 정새롬과 이지희 작가의 2인전 [Vanilla Sky – Between Dream and Reality] 를 개최한다. 

정새롬 작가는 인상주의와 팝아트 그리고 추상표현주의에서 받은 영감으로 정물화와 초상화를 축약된 형식과 이미지로 재해석하는 작업을 해왔으며 이지희 작가는 초현실이고 몽환적인 상상 속의 이미지를 역설적으로 작가 특유의 극사실주의 회화로 표현하는 신선한 구성을 선보여 왔다. 이번 전시에서는 두 작가의 작업 초기부터 가장 최근 작품들을 전시하여 두 작가의 독특한 회화 세계를 느낄 수 있다.    

전시 제목인 Vanilla Sky (바닐라 빛 하늘) 는 2001년 영화 Vanilla Sky 에 배경으로 등장하는 클로드 모네(Monet Claude, 1840-1926)의 작품 ‘아르장퇴이유의 세느강’ (The Seine at Argenteuil-Vanilla Sky 1873) 의 부재에서 인용되었다. 이 시기는 모네가 유명세를 타지는 않았지만 부인, 아들과 함께 행복한 시간을 보낸 시기로서 모네는 파리 근교인 아르장퇴이유의 아름다운 주변 풍경을 작품에 담았다. 구름이 빛에 반짝이며 만들어 내는 바닐라 빛 하늘은 비현실적으로 아름다워 현실을 잊을 만큼 매력적이며 깨어나고 싶지 않은 꿈 같이 달콤하다. 그러나 시간이 지나면서 금새 어두워지며 찰나에 지나지 않는 아름다움 속에 차가운 현실을 마주보게 한다.   빛 아래에서 사물이 정확하게 보이지 않는다는 것은 미술에서는 추상의 도래를 예견한 것이며, 알고 있는 것과 보이는 것의 차이를 보여주어 전통과의 단절을 시도한 모네는 아방가르드 미술의 선구자로 수 많은 예술가들에게 영감을 주었다. 정새롬과 이지희 작가의 작품은 자연과 동식물 그리고 인간 등 현실을 소재로 하지만 현실에 존재하지 않는 색다른 구성으로 질서정연하고 제한적인 표현에 대항한다. 상상, 꿈을 상기시키는 초현실주의의 구성 방법과 인상주의, 팝아트, 초현실주의 등 여러 미술사조를 넘나드는 자유로운 시각적 표현은 관객의 상상력을 자극하여 스스로 의미를 발견하도록 함으로써 관객의 창조적 참여를 유도한다. 

정새롬의 회화는 본질적 형태와 색채감, 그리고 그들 사이의 조화를 추구한다. 폴 세잔(1839~1906)은 우리가 사물을 바라볼 때 처음으로 눈에 들어오는 것은 색채의 조각이며 형태는 그것들을 바탕으로 뒤따라 인식하게 된다고 생각했다. 세잔의 정물화에서 모티브를 얻었다고 말하는 정새롬 작가는 대상의 외형이 아닌 본질적 구조를 포착하여 자연과 사물 그리고 인물을 선과 면 그리고 원으로 단순화시킨다.  팝 아트와 인상주의를 동시에 환기시키는 정새롬의 회화 속 인물의 얼굴은 도형으로 단순화돼 있고 사과나 꽃, 식물들도 원형과 곡선의 기하학적 특징이 두드러진다.  인물의 얼굴을 동그란 공으로 대체하고 인물의 신체는 두꺼운 윤곽선과 색 면 등 최소한의 도형으로 단순화시킨다. 특정인이 아닌 일반적인 인간 형상을 강조하기 위해서 작가는 의도적으로 개인의 외양적 세부 묘사를 지우고 얼굴을 기본적인 도형으로 단순화 시켜 그래픽적으로 변형된 인물을 생성한다. 구분 가능한 개인이나 특정인이 아닌 현대인의 초상으로 그려내어 관객이 자신을 모습을 투영하고 대입시킬 수 있도록 유도한다.  작품에 등장하는 식물의 줄기는 초자연적으로 빠르게 성장하는 움직임을 보이며 활기차 보이는데 현실의 대상이지만 마치 꿈 속에서 보이는 기이한 광경을 상기시킨다. 인물은 주변의 꽃과 식물 속에서 과일을 따거나 독서를 하고 차를 마시는 등 고요함 속에 명쾌함을 보인다. 정새롬은 대상의 사실적인 묘사를 피하고 일상적인 모습을 회화적으로 표현하기 위해 추상적인 붓터치와 물감의 흘러내림을 의도하여 화면을 구성한다.  객관적 사물을 작가의 주관적 감각으로 형태를 왜곡하고 색채를 통해 감각과 감정을 작가의 본능에 따라 표현하여 자신만의 독특한 회화 세계를 보여준다. 


이지희 작가는 작업 초기부터 ‘안식처 (shelter)’ 라는 주제를 고양이, 수족관, 과일 등 일상적 사물을 통해 초현실적으로 표현하여 이야기하고 있다. 작가는 상상 속의 이미지들을 작가 특유의 극사실주의 기법으로 그려내는데 대상의 초점을 클로즈업하거나 흐리는 방식으로 신선한 시각적 경험을 전달한다. 이지희의 작품에는 어린 고양이, 디저트 과일, 수족관 들이 등장하는데 녹아 내리는 초콜릿의 끈적한 질감과 고양이 솜털의 보송보송하고 매끄러운 질감을 표현하는 극사실주의적 표현 방식은 이지희 작가의 회화에서 특히 두드러진다. 그러나 섬세한 붓 터치와는 대조적으로 작가는 초점 흐리기 방식 (fade out) 을 통해 연출된 장면이 실제인 것과 같은 착각을 일으키게 한다.  대상의 본래 비율을 따르지 않고 대상을 클로즈업하여 극사실적으로 묘사하는 동시에 같은 화면에 있는 또 다른 대상은 반대로 초점을 흐리고 원근법을 과감히 이탈하여 추상적으로 표현한다. 과감한 원색 처리, 그리고 대상의 극사실적인 묘사와 대상의 간략화와 추상화를 통해 기존의 회화에서 보이는 방식과 구조를 거침없이 이탈한다. 

작품 속 주체인 고양이는 광활한 수족관 속에서 헤엄치는 물고기의 자유로움과 평온함을 동경하는 듯 수족관에서 눈을 떼지 못하고 달콤한 디저트에 집중하지만 자유롭고 편안하다.  거대한 고래의 역동적 움직임과 수초의 미세한 움직임에도 반응하고 탐닉한다. 작품 속에는 인간이 등장하지 않는데 고양이들은 인간이나 그 어떤 누구의 방해도 없이 그들만의 상상의 공간에서 평온하고 자유롭다. 고양이에게 케익은 평화롭고 광활한 수족관이 되고 수족관 안의 고래와 수중 생명체들은 자신을 탐닉하고 있는 고양이의 세계와는 단절되어 온전한 그들만의 안식처에서 안전하고 자유롭다. 광활한 수족관에서 느낀 평온함과 작은 고양이에서 느낀 따뜻함을 ‘Sweet Shelter’ 시리즈를 통해 전달하는 이지희 작가는 광활한 수족관이 고양이에게 안식처가 되듯 현대인들도 자신만의 안식처가 무엇인지 또 그 안식처를 찾았는지 숙고하게 한다. 

[Vanilla Sky – Between Dream and Reality]를 통해 초현실주의, 인상주의 그리고 팝아트를 넘나드는 자유로운 시각적 표현과 대상의 초점을 클로즈업하기도 또 흐리기도 하는 다양한 기법을 시도하는 두 작가의 신선한 작품 세계를 경험하기 바란다
