Los Angeles based Korean artist, Park Soo Jung's works are in line with the art movement, "Light and Space Movement" that occurred in southern California in the 1960s. In the 1960s, when minimalism was prevalent in New York City, artists from California developed opt art, minimalism, and geometric abstractions using geometric forms and light to focus on "space" and "perception" of the viewer. The intense sun in California has captivated artists in Southern California and they have created "Light and Space Movement " using industrial materials such as glass, plastic, and acrylic. Drawing countless lines on a dense, very hard-surface like plaxiglas plate and coloring the empty space between the lines is performance art itself. Park Soo Jung draws a line on the surface of the plaxiglas with a knife, grinds the front and back of the plaxiglas with a sander, and applies the color by rubbing ink and pigment on the worn surface. Soo Jung carefully absorbs colors using fine pigments to create shades of various colors; from transparent colors to more saturated colors. Fine particles of pigment absorbed by horizontal lines drawn on the front and back sides of the plexiglas panel are deeply dispersed along the flow of the texture of the plexiglas, embracing a richer and more diverse color. Maintaining transparency even inside the opaque surface of the plexiglas cannot be made on traditional canvases, but only as a result of the artist's proficiency in emptying, refilling the medium with pigments to allow light to penetrate. 

At close distance, a sharp line drawn with a knife is revealed on the surface, reminding the artist of dynamic movement like action painting, which contrasts with the contemplative, quiet, and meditative sentiment felt throughout the work. In details, dynamic lines partially carved with knives are derived and cause tension, and many lines drawn on the surface are spaces created for coloring; spaces created by artists to combine colors and light, and spaces that burst the organic flow of energy and color. The edges of the panels are obliquely cut to create an infinite spectrum of light, refracting and reverting light from the outside in all directions. This is Park Soo Jung's unique way of working to explore the effect of the fusion of color and light and derive the organic experience that the light responding to space transmits to the viewer. In this exhibition, Park Soo Jung's single panel and multi-panel works with several panels are presented, and the simple arrangement of rectangular panels reminds us of Donald Judd's work, which represents Minimalism. However, the energy and vitality created by color and light also makes you feel the splendor and abundance of Maximalism. Park Soo Jung's work began with the artist's own quest for emotional perception, but rather than technical understanding or portrayal of the work, the artist encourages viewers to experience poetic, romantic even simple beauty, and endless echoes induced by the space between lines.

Soo Jung PARK 박수정 (1968~)

로스앤젤레스에서 거주하며 활동하는 박수정 작가의 작품은 1960년대 캘리포니아 남부에서 발생한 예술 운동, ‘빛과 공간’, ‘Light and Space Movement’ 과 괘를 같이 한다. 뉴욕에서 미니멀리즘이 유행하던 1960년대, 미 서부의 작가들은 기하학적인 형태와 빛을 사용하여 '공간감'과 보는 이의 '지각'에 주목하여 옵아트, 미니멀리즘, 기하학적 추상을 발전시켰다. 미 서부의 강렬한 태양은 남부 캘리포니아의 예술가들을 오랫동안 사로잡아왔고 이들은 유리·플라스틱·아크릴과 같은 산업 소재를 이용하며 ‘Light and Space’ 예술을 탄생시켰다.  

박수정 작가의 작업은 로버트 아윈 (Robert Irwin), 제임스 터렐 (James Turrell), 래리 벨(Larry Bell) 과 같은 로스엔젤레스 지역의 거장들과 같이 빛과 공간의 상호작용을 탐구하지만 잉크, 안료와 같은 오래되고 전통적인 재료를 사용한다는 점에서 구별된다. 밀도가 높고 표면이 매우 단단한 플락시글라스 Plexiglas 판 위에 무수한 선을 긋고 선과 선 사이의 비워진 공간에 색을 입힌다는 것은 고통에 가까운 수행의 과정이다. 박수정 작가는 나이프 (scoring knife)로 플락시글라스 표면에 선을 긋고 사포 (hand sander) 로 앞 뒷면을 갈아낸 다음 마모된 표면 위에 잉크와 안료를 문지르면서 색을 입힌다. 작가는 플락시글라스 표면에 마모된 미세한 지형적 변화를 이용하여 세심하게 색을 흡수시켜 투명한 색상에서 보다 채도가 높은 색상에 이르기까지 다양한 색의 음영을 만든다.  박수정 작가는 선 과 선 사이에 매번 테이프를 붙이고 색을 입히는 과정을 반복하는데 이는 하나의 색 선이 반복되지 않고 제 각기 다른 색을 조합하여 색의 음영을 만들기 위한 작가 만의 고유한 작업 방식이다. 이 때문에 중복되는 색은 없고 같아 보이는 레드 컬러도 실제로 똑 같은 레드가 아니다. 플락시글라스 패널의 앞 면과 뒷 면에 그어진 수평선들에 흡수된 안료의 미세한 입자는 플락시글라스의 질감의 흐름 따라 깊이 분산되면서 한층 더 풍부하고 다양한 빛깔을 품는다. 플락시글라스의 불투명한 표면 안쪽에서도 투명도를 유지하는 것은 전통적인 캔버스에서는 만들어 질 수 없는데, 이는 빛이 투과될 수 있도록 공간을 비워내고 다시 색으로 채우며 재료의 물성을 다루는 작가의 원숙한 숙련의 결과이다.

근거리에서 보면 나이프로 힘껏 내어 그은 날카로운 선이 표면에 드러나며 마치 액션 페인팅처럼 작가의 역동적인 움직임을 상기시키는데 이는 작품 전체에서 느껴지는 사색적이고 고요하며 명상적인 정서와 대조된다. 이렇듯 자세히 보면 부분적으로 칼로 새겨진 동적 라인들이 도출되며 긴장을 유발하는데 표면에 그어진 수많은 선들은 채색을 위해 만든 공간으로 색과 빛이 결합할 수 있도록 작가가 창조하는 공간이며 에너지와 색의 유기적인 흐름을 터 주는 공간이다. 패널의 가장자리는 비스듬히 사선으로 커팅 (beveled cut)되어 외부에서 들어오는 빛을 굴절시키고 사방으로 반향 시키면서 무한한 빛의 스펙트럼을 창조한다. 이는 색과 빛의 융합의 효과를 탐구하고 공간과 반응하는 빛이 관람자에게 전달하는 유기적 경험을 도출하기 위한 박수정 작가의 고유한 작업 방식이다. 이번 전시에서는 박수정 작가의 싱글 패널 (single panel)과 여러 개의 패널을 함께 배치한 멀티 패널 (multi panel) 작품을 선보이는데 직사각형 패널의 단순한 배열은 미니멀리즘 Minimalism을 대표하는 도널드 저드 Donald Judd 의 작품을 상기시킨다. 그러나 색과 빛이 만들어 내는 에너지와 생동감은 맥시멀리즘 Maximalism 의 화려함과 풍성함 또한 느끼게 한다.  박수정 작가의 작품은 작가 스스로의 감정적 인식의 탐구에서 시작되었지만, 작가는 작품에 대한 기술적인 이해나 묘사보다는 작품 전반에 흐르는 시적이고 낭만적이며, 평온하고, 단순한 아름다움, 그리고 선과 선 사이의 공간에 의해 유도되는 끝없는 관점의 반향을 경험하라고 전한다.
