Vivian Choi Gallery is pleased to present "Abstract Field of Color; Color Beyond the Radiance" featuring three artists, Won Kun Jun, Soo Jung Park, and Andy Harwood, who capture light in the picture plane through repetitive process of art making.
A Düsseldorf based Korean artist Won Kun Jun, a California based Korean artist Soo Jung Park and a Brisbane-based Australian artist Andy Harwood focus on the most essential physical properties of painting: line and color. Their paintings are geometrical or composed of swimming color fields, which are simple in form, but repeated patterns of color surfaces evoke emotions. Although these three participating artists approach painting with minimal expression, the colors they create mean more than 'color'. Color is a tool that conveys the artist's emotions and visualizes light, and communicates with the audience. Three artists combine colors with other colors, or spaces formed with knives, to expand the color into the spectrum of light and explore the synesthetic experience in which color and light respond to the viewer's consciousness. Won Kun Jun, Soo Jung Park, and Andy Harwood focus on the infinite scalability of colors through the spectrum of colors formed by subtle shades between colors rather than artificial combinations of colors. The three artists focus on the vibration and amplitude of colors that gently resonate on medium surfaces through subtle representations of shades between colors rather than separating boundaries by horizontal or vertical divisions between color fields. The repetition of the process of applying, scratching, and refilling colors countless times creates a solemn resonance by conveying the process of the artist's performance, mastering the physical properties of the material.

Since the 1990s, Won Kun Jun, who lives and works in Germany, has expanded the monochromatic painting to a new perspective of the artist by exploring the relationship between the abstract area and color of monochromatic painting. Color is the basic element and key subject of Won Kun Jun's painting. By overlapping colors countless times over time, the artist has created a visual space in the painting and captured the infinite light and depth of color that the shades of color create.  Won Kun Jun applies a thin layer of watery acrylic paint on the canvas more than 20 times, distributes the color evenly, and wipes it with water and a brush. Again, the process of stacking and erasing the four colors, red, yellow, green, and blue, is repeated, which takes up to a year or more. The paint marks and layers of color overlap each other to create a subtle color, resulting in a natural color from the bottom of the canvas. The artist captures the process of combining multiple colors becoming another color with a unique identity and the light and shade created by subtle differences in colors by overlapping layers countless times. One color is combined with another to extend to a new layer of color, surrounding the surface of the colors with corona and radiance, and the process of wiping the paint and making traces becomes a decisive factor in the formation of this photo-circle. As if a clear glaze was applied to the surface of the ceramic, the brilliant light that gently leaked from the surface of the canvas visually conveys an infinite layer of time. As the paint is placed more than 50 times, the paint flows down from the edge of the canvas and traces of wiping remain. The side of the canvas is a symbolic space in the world of Won Kun Jun’s works, presenting the process of work such as performance, the artist's mission as an artist, and traces of time in many layers.

A Los Angeles based Korean artist, Park Soo Jung's works are in line with the art movement, "Light and Space Movement" that occurred in southern California in the 1960s. In the 1960s, when minimalism was prevalent in New York City, artists from the California developed opt art, minimalism, and geometric abstractions using geometric forms and light to focus on "space" and "perception" of the viewer. The intense sun in California has captivated artists in Southern California and they have created "Light and Space Movement " using industrial materials such as glass, plastic, and acrylic. Drawing countless lines on a dense, very hard-surface like plaxiglas plate and coloring the empty space between the lines is performance art itself. Park Soo Jung draws a line on the surface of the plaxiglas with a knife, grinds the front and back of the plaxiglas with a sander, and applies the color by rubbing ink and pigment on the worn surface. Soo Jung carefully absorbs colors using fine pigments to create shades of various colors; from transparent colors to more saturated colors. Fine particles of pigment absorbed by horizontal lines drawn on the front and back sides of the plexiglas panel are deeply dispersed along the flow of the texture of the plexiglas, embracing a richer and more diverse color. Maintaining transparency even inside the opaque surface of the plexiglas cannot be made on traditional canvases, but only as a result of the artist's proficiency in emptying, refilling the medium with pigments to allow light to penetrate. 

At close distance, a sharp line drawn with a knife is revealed on the surface, reminding the artist of dynamic movement like action painting, which contrasts with the contemplative, quiet, and meditative sentiment felt throughout the work. In details, dynamic lines partially carved with knives are derived and cause tension, and many lines drawn on the surface are spaces created for coloring; spaces created by artists to combine colors and light, and spaces that burst the organic flow of energy and color. The edges of the panels are obliquely cut to create an infinite spectrum of light, refracting and reverting light from the outside in all directions. This is Park Soo Jung's unique way of working to explore the effect of the fusion of color and light and derive the organic experience that the light responding to space transmits to the viewer. In this exhibition, Park Soo Jung's single panel and multi-panel works with several panels are presented, and the simple arrangement of rectangular panels reminds us of Donald Judd's work, which represents Minimalism. However, the energy and vitality created by color and light also makes you feel the splendor and abundance of Maximalism. Park Soo Jung's work began with the artist's own quest for emotional perception, but rather than technical understanding or portrayal of the work, the artist encourages viewers to experience poetic, romantic even simple beauty, and endless echoes induced by the space between lines.

Australian-born Brisbane-based artist Andy Harwood has participated in numerous exhibitions by galleries and museums in Sydney, Madrid, London, and Austria for more than 15 years. In particular, Andy Harwood’s latest work, <9 to the Power of 9(2)>, was included in the exhibition, 《Bauhaus NOW》at Museum of Brisbane, drawing considerable attention from art museum curators and worldwide collectors. Andy Harwood studied Design at Queensland College of Art at the University of Queensland in 2004 and established  his own unique style by combining the influence from Piet Mondrian, Kazimir Malevich, and Josef Albers with his design background.

Andy Harwood expresses human emotions in the artist’s own visual language through geometric and abstract color fields. The works presented in this exhibition, 《The Abstract Field of Color; Color Beyond the Radiance》are part of the artist's latest <Future Rumination 2022> series and are studies on the ability of abstract geometry to arouse emotional responses from audiences. This series is homage to Optical Art, especially Joseph Albers' work, <Homage to the Square>. Influenced by Richard Annuszkiewicz's <Temple> series, the <Future Rumination> series explores the functional relationship between the retina and the perception of the brain. Andy Harwood focuses on the senses of the human brain that flow between order and disorder and explores the psychological effects that geometric and non-conceived forms convey through mathematical proportions. In particular, focusing on the relationship between form and structure, attention is paid to the interaction of human vision and the form, size, location, color, and space of the work. The composition of the work is calculated mathematically to create an overwhelming sense derived from balance and proportion. Contrasting color spectra and constant color patterns induce the audience to participate in diverse visual narratives.

Harwood paints layers of various textures to give energy and movement to the canvas. The repeated pattern overlaps the foreground and background across the canvas, diverting the viewer's gaze from the center focus. The viewer's gaze moves according to the tension between the inside and outside spaces of the canvas, with the edge of the canvas focusing on the inside shifting from bright to dark, drawing the eye to the center of the canvas like an ‘Infinity Mirror’. Harwood creates a translucent, bright layer of color to create an echo effect of the shape retreating and advancing. Gradual color gradations are created by mixing colors to form geometric structural precision. The viewer's sense of space and reality is distorted by watching the shape retreat and advance through the tension of geometry and color simultaneously. Repetition of color and form reflects repetition of thought; the more deeply ruminated, the more unable to escape the thought, paradoxically, excessive analysis freezes the thought in place. Harwood visualizes this paradox in the form of an endless ‘Infinity Well’. Featuring color columns and fluorescent colors such as neon lights, < Future Rumination> guides the audience's perspective in the boundary between order, disorder and movement and static.
